Spring 2013 Running Update

Note: This blog post doesn’t include a recipe.

Tina & Andrea CdAAs longtime readers of my blog may remember, I posted last February that I had run a half marathon in the Seattle area to qualify for the 2012 New York Marathon. Then, in May 2012, I ran the Couer d’Alene marathon in Idaho (see photo at right), finishing in 3:45.48, just shy of my Boston Marathon qualifying time of 3:45.

I was determined to qualify for Boston, so I set out on my mission by choosing a potentially fast course—at least if the weather cooperated.

On September 9, 2012, with the athletic support of my husband (my number one fan), I ran the Skagit Flats Marathon (see photo above). Despite the 15mph headwind for the last 5 miles, I ran the marathon in a time of 3:41.19 which easily qualified me for the 2013 Boston Marathon (qualifying times have been getting faster every year).

Tina_NYCUnfortunately, my New York marathon plans didn’t exactly come off as planned. Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast just seven days before the event, and—after insisting it would be held anyway—the organizers cancelled the race just after I arrived at JFK airport, a mere 36 hours before I was to head to the starting line. I spent an abbreviated weekend in the city (and took a run in Central Park, as shown in the photo at right) before returning to Seattle and my training.

After a lot of thought, and a lot more running, I decided to go ahead and return to New York for the marathon in November 2013. Prior to that, however, I’ll be running the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, and I’m going to join my friend Carrie in Calgary for the Calgary Half-Ironman Triathlon on July 28. In preparation for that event, I’m going to do a triathlon in Walla Walla called the Onion Man over Memorial Day weekend.

I’ll keep you posted.

Thank you Edie. I am home safe. I had finished the race and was about a block and half away when I heard and saw the explosion. I will post more shortly.
