Fall Chowder

photo 2 (2)A good, hearty chowder makes a wonderful meal on cold winter evenings. It is also a nice change after the Thanksgiving turkey.

I recently prepared this recipe for an event I catered for a Henry Art Gallery board meeting. I served the chowder in individual bowls and garnished them with fresh minced chives (as shown in the photo above), but it’s equally good ladled right from the stove into big bowls for your family. Turkey Help?

baked pies (2)I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I enjoyed the day with my family, and then spent the rest of the weekend with family, our pups, and getting ready for the busy month ahead.

If you still have turkey leftover from your feast, and your family is tiring of turkey sandwiches, here is an idea for something different. Continue reading

Holiday Baking, Part II

fall tartsOn Sunday, I posted a recipe for Sweet Potato Hand Pies, which I made for a client who was attending pie-themed Thanksgiving brunch last year.

Today, I’m sharing a second hand pie recipe, which I made for my client as well as for my own family last holiday season (see photo above)—this one filled with fresh cranberries infused with orange. I found this recipe in the November 2012 issue of Bon Appétit. Continue reading

Holiday Baking, Part I

photo (3)

It’s hard to believe that I last posted in early November, and now the month is almost over. I imagine that—like me—you are probably thinking about Thanksgiving. If you’re really organized, you’ve probably got your menu planned already. But if not, I hope a few holiday baking ideas on the blog will help inspire you.

Last year, one of my clients was invited to a Thanksgiving brunch for about 20 people, with the instructions that everyone was supposed to bring pie. Continue reading

New York Bound

NYCBecause I have been a sloth about blogging, some of you may not know that I have completed a few events in the past year, and this weekend I am in New York to make another attempt at the New York Marathon. Nonrunners may have forgotten that it was cancelled last year due to Hurricane Sandy, but I have thought about it many times and have known since Christmas that I was going to return for the 2013 race. (The photo above is Central Park in 2012.) Continue reading

Cookie Time

Jan-Feb5-2012 008One of my clients recently asked me to make these chocolate shortbread cookies for her, and a friend of hers asked for the recipe, so I’m posting it again now. Continue reading

Apple, Fennel, and Grapefruit Salad

fennel saladPeople often think salads must include lettuce, but this is a favorite of mine for plated events in the spring or fall.

At events, the salads are often placed on the table prior to the guests sitting down. Salads might sit for as long as 10 minutes before all of the guests arrive, and the beauty of using fennel and apples in this situation is that they do not wilt—or at least not to the extent that leaf lettuces do. Cupcakes for Mom

Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend, and here’s a dessert to make for your mother if she’s following a paleo or gluten-free diet—or if you are, and you want to enjoy a sweet treat with your family. Sharing this recipe can also be a way to convince people who can’t imagine eating paleo that it’s really not so bad. Continue reading

Pulled Pork Bites

pulled_pork_photo

I’m constantly trying to find fun, new, one- to two-bite appetizers that are easy to eat as finger food. The photo above was taken at an event I did this past winter. It is pulled pork on plantain chips, topped with tomatillo salsa and diced avocado.

Salumi Crisps

Last fall, one of my clients got the new Barefoot Contessa Cookbook (Barefoot Contessa Foolproof), and in looking through it we both were intrigued by Ina Garten’s recipe for carmelized bacon.

I borrowed the cookbook for the weekend, and because I had all of the ingredients at home, I tried the recipe—but I played with it a bit, of course.
